| Bruce Peninsula Seniors Connect |
The overall mission and mandate of Seniors Connect is to contribute to the independence and active participation of seniors living in the Bruce Peninsula in all aspects of the community, resulting in improved quality of life. This group of volunteers, formed in 2003, has been able to achieve this momentous task by supporting initiatives & networks that promote physical, mental, social and emotional well-being.
The Bruce Peninsula is one of the fastest growing senior’s areas in southern Ontario. Between the two rural communities, seniors represent approx. 40% of the population, compared to 22% provincially.
With a population of approximately 15,000 in over 15 communities throughout a large geographic area, issues of access, isolation, inclusion and participation present a continued challenges to seniors living in that area.
Seniors Connect has been able to help overcome those challenges by offering seniors by being a central resource for program or service information of particular interest to seniors. This may include home-care, pensions, disability supports, elder abuse resources, home maintenance and accessibility programs.
They’ve initiated outreach programs to keep seniors connected, and alleviate issues of loneliness or depression.
One of their most successful programs has been computer training for seniors. By building the capacity of seniors through Internet training, Seniors Connect has contributed to their ability to get "connected" and learn how to find information on programs, services and interests - and stay connected with family & friends. To date, 128 seniors have completed Computer Training with waiting lists for the next sessions. |
