River Village Co-op Market
River Village Co-op Market was made possible by the community, for the community and formed because the town of 1000 was without a grocery store for 2 years. The community pulled together to meet this need and bring stability and employment back to their small rural town. The initial project of re-opening the grocery store was a huge undertaking for the community with a 4 month cleanup, renovations and purchasing of new equipment.

They continue to improve the business to stay competitive and be able to continue offering employment to the local residents. They've expanded the services to include selling of pizza, which has resulted in longer hours of operation.

River Village Co-op Market now employs 15 people, offering in store bakery, fresh local produce, Sears outlet and fresh pizza.

The store before was going into receivership and residents would have to travel 15 kms to get any groceries. Rural communities need a strong anchor like a grocery store to survive. The community rallied together to form the first Co-operative grocery store in Southwestern Ontario, 360 members strong. Their objective is to continue supplying and adding more services for the residents of Teeswater and surrounding area. The community has demonstrated the benefits of coming together in the face of a challenge and we are pleased to be recognizing the efforts of the members of the River Village Co-op Market.
