2011 Entrepreneur of the Year
Crow's Nest Pub & Deli
The Crowsnest Pub & Restaurant/Deli had been operating in the heart of Tobermory overlooking the Little Tub Harbour for 28 years when Matt and Kristin Buckley decided to take a huge risk. They would leave their London home where they were constables with the Ontario Provincial Police to purchase the Crowsnest. Matthew has been a frequent guest of The Crowsnest as he has vacationed at a cottage in Stokes Bay since he was a child and had a long history of working in the hospitality industry. The transition went well and they had a great first summer in Tobermory. Tragically the business was destroyed by fire on November 27, 2010, and Matt and Kristen were faced with having to re-build the Tobermory icon. They were been overwhelmed by local support and it was that support that made re-building the only option for the Buckleys.  Matt was quoted on the radio as saying that “he and Kristin may be the owners of the Crowsnest, but the Crowsnest belongs to Tobermory”. They would never consider not rebuilding “under his watch”. And what a rebuild! They broke ground early spring in hopes of opening in time for the beginning of the tourist season and with determination, long hours and a great deal of support from family, friends and the community out of the ashes the new Crowsnest opened to rave reviews the first of June, 2011. It is because of their commitment to their supporters, staff and the community of Tobermory that Matt and Kristin Buckley have been named the 2011 Entrepreneurs of the Year.
